Dark Web Monitoring for Business: What It Does and Where the Limits Are
Dark web monitoring continuously watches selected sources – such as dark web forums, TOR services, marketplaces, paste sites and messaging channels – for indications about your company, for example published credentials. Unlike a one-time data breach check it delivers alerts on an ongoing basis. No provider can promise complete coverage of the dark web.
One-time check or ongoing monitoring?
- Data breach check: a snapshot for one domain, free and fast – suitable for a first overview.
- Monitoring: ongoing observation with alerts about new findings – suitable if you want to react promptly.
What dark web monitoring typically observes
- Published or traded credentials and data sets related to your company
- Mentions in hacker discussions and ransomware activity
- Indications of stealer malware and botnets
How common are findings in practice?
According to an evaluation by Darkscope, whose data also feeds into the BreachFinder check, roughly one in seven daily-scanned companies (around 15 %) most recently had at least one compromised access in the dark web. The number of findings has risen by roughly 20 % over the past twelve months.
A compromised access is therefore not an exception but affects a noticeable share of the companies checked on a regular basis. No breakdown by industry is available, and Darkscope does not disclose the detailed methodology for competitive reasons – the figures are rounded.
Limits
No monitoring covers all dark web content, and a finding says nothing about extent or damage. What matters is who assesses a finding and what happens next: classification, immediate steps and, where applicable, notification duties.
Monitoring from APAsec
APAsec offers company-specific dark web monitoring with Apascope Total Monitor. Findings are forwarded and the next steps are discussed personally. More information is available at darknet.apasec.de (German).
Frequently asked questions
Does monitoring replace securing my systems?
